CARRY ON, MR. BOWDITCH

This long time classic details in novel style the voyages, ideas, and successes of Nathaniel Bowditch. Although written for young people, it is a good read for adults too. You'll get a good feel for the way mathematics and the Nautical Almanac played an important part in celestial navigation of the eighteenth century, and how Bowditch had amazing success in teaching it to common seamen. This book is read by every high schooler in Salem, MA. due to the proud Bowditch heritage there. It would make a perfect introduction to navigation for anyone not already versed in it.
