Montana GPS

If you have an iPad, iPhone, or other smart phone or pad, you know that touch screen operation is the wave of future electronics. The new Montana capitalizes on this concept with a larger (4 in. diagonal) touch screen which is nearly twice the area of previous handheld GPSs. Its microSD card slot allows easy use of Garmin's Bluechart G2 marine charts (at a reasonable price), but also City Navigator which converts into a Nuvi type of device (but without voice prompts), and Topographic  charts which include US lakes and rivers. In short, the Montana does just about everything, but without the need for WiFi.

All models have a worldwide basemap, 3-axis compass and a barometric altimeter which will warn of impending weather. They are waterproof, sunlight readable and have high speed USB and serial interfaces. Maybe best of all they are powered not only by included rechargeable lithium batteries (16 hrs) but by user replaceable 3 AA batteries for up to 22 hrs. This means you will never be a slave to external current for recharging.

The Montana 600 is the basic model. The Montana 650 adds a 5 megapixel camera that automatically geo-tags pictures allowing you to mark, remember, and navigate back to that exact spot in the future. The Montana 650t adds preloaded topographic maps.
